The Gospel of John: A Chapter-by-Chapter Study Guide

The Gospel of John is unlike any other Gospel. Written by the Apostle John — the one Jesus loved — it is a deeply theological, beautifully crafted account of Jesus’s life and ministry designed to lead readers to saving faith. John himself states his purpose: “These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31).

The Gospel of John opens with one of the most profound sentences ever written: “In the beginning was the Word.”

Key Themes in John’s Gospel

The Word (Logos): John 1:1-14 introduces Jesus as the eternal Word of God who became flesh. This is one of the most powerful theological statements about the deity and humanity of Christ in all Scripture. The Seven “I Am” Statements: Jesus declares “I am the bread of life,” “the light of the world,” “the door,” “the good shepherd,” “the resurrection and the life,” “the way, the truth, and the life,” and “the true vine.” Each reveals a different facet of His divine identity. Signs and Belief: John records seven miraculous signs, each designed to produce faith in the reader.

Chapter-by-Chapter Highlights

  • John 1 — The Word becomes flesh; calling of the first disciples.
  • John 3 — Born again; John 3:16 — the gospel in one verse.
  • John 4 — Jesus and the woman at the well; worship in Spirit and truth.
  • John 11 — The raising of Lazarus; “I am the resurrection and the life.”
  • John 13-17 — The Upper Room Discourse; Jesus’s final teachings and prayer.
  • John 20 — The resurrection; Thomas’s confession; John’s stated purpose.
