The Armor of God: Understanding Ephesians 6:10-18

The Armor of God passage in Ephesians 6:10-18 is one of the most beloved and practical passages in the New Testament. Paul writes from prison, using the image of a Roman soldier’s armor to describe the spiritual equipment God provides for every believer engaged in the battle against sin, deception, and spiritual darkness.

God equips every believer for spiritual battle — and our weapons are mighty through Him.

The Six Pieces of Armor

  • Belt of Truth (v.14) — Truth is the foundation that holds everything together. Walk in integrity and the truth of Scripture.
  • Breastplate of Righteousness (v.14) — Christ’s righteousness covers our hearts. We live in right standing before God and pursue holy living.
  • Shoes of the Gospel of Peace (v.15) — We stand firm and are ready to share the good news wherever we go.
  • Shield of Faith (v.16) — Faith extinguishes the devil’s flaming arrows — his lies, accusations, and temptations.
  • Helmet of Salvation (v.17) — Our minds are protected by the assurance of our salvation in Christ.
  • Sword of the Spirit (v.17) — The Word of God is our only offensive weapon. Jesus used it against Satan in the wilderness (Matthew 4).

The Role of Prayer (v.18)

Paul adds a seventh element — prayer. We are to “pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.” Prayer is the atmosphere in which we put on and maintain the armor. Without prayer, the armor cannot function as it was designed.
