Finding God in Hard Times: Faith When Life Gets Difficult

Everyone who has walked with God for any length of time has faced seasons when faith feels impossible. A diagnosis that changes everything. A prayer that seems unanswered for years. A loss so deep it knocks the breath out of you. In those moments, the question rises: Is God still there? Does He still care?

Light at the end of a dark path representing hope and faith in hard times
Even in the darkest valley, the Good Shepherd is with us (Psalm 23:4).

God Is Present in the Pain

Psalm 34:18 is one of the most comforting verses in all of Scripture: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” God does not distance Himself from our suffering — He draws near to it. Jesus Himself was “a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief” (Isaiah 53:3). He knows what it is to weep, to feel abandoned, to suffer unjustly.

What to Do When Faith Is Hard

  • Be honest with God — The Psalms model lament. David cried out, “How long, Lord?” (Psalm 13:1). God can handle your honesty.
  • Remember His past faithfulness — Write down what God has done. Rehearse His track record.
  • Stay connected to community — Do not isolate. The body of Christ carries one another (Galatians 6:2).
  • Keep reading Scripture — Even when it feels dry, the Word has power. It is sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12).
  • Wait actively — Isaiah 40:31 promises those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength.
